Jen Rulon

It was Labor Day. I was laying out at the LifeTime Fitness pool, while Chris swam. I didn’t have to swim that day, so I was able to chill for 90 minutes or so. While, I had my phone, I listened to music, took a nap and started thinking about September and then heading into the final quarter of 2017.

Wow. Where did the time go? It has been a whirlwind of my own training, coaching my AMAZING Rulon Racers and building my business.

After the Endurance Coaching Summit in Boulder, CO, early August, I really had an “Ah Ha” moment of my coaching and my business. I broke down the four pillars that I have going on right now with

Here are they are:

  • 1:1 “Fearless” Triathlete Coaching
  • Rulon University (Coming Soon!)
  • Rulon Racing (Applications coming October 1st)
  • Coaching the Coach to ROCK THEIR OWN Business

Let me break each one down for you, so you can get an understanding of what I am talking about as I know a lot of you have been reaching out to me on a couple of different things.

1:1 “Fearless” Triathlon Coaching

Currently, I coach a very limited number of 1:1 athletes. Why? Coaching 1:1 athletes, the way that I LOVE to coach 1:1 is very time consuming. So, I am going to LOVE those peeps that pay me to be their coach. I am going to get them to the finish line with a smile but also empower them along the way, on and off the race course.

My ideal clients for my 1:1 are hard working, determined, will give me NO FU$%ing excuses and they just figure their shit out. I will also “fire” 1:1 clients or “reject” them if they give me excuses, do not respect me as a coach and are constantly doing their own training (adding in workouts or races).

I have been a triathlon coach since 2001, when I received my USA Triathlon Level I certification. So, I can chose who I want to spend my days with as a coach. What I love about the athletes that I coach, usually will become friends. That is so freaking awesome.

Rulon University (Coming Soon!)

I am SO STOKED about this. As I realized that currently, I am the only coach with, I could not take on a lot of 1:1 Clients (see above). I started asking myself,

“How can I get to MORE triathletes to cross the finish line with a smile?”

A lightbulb turned on, by putting together my “own” University. You have to remember, I have been coaching since 2001, received my Masters Degree in Kinesiology, so I have a SHIT TON of information in this head of mine. The last 4 years, that information has been put in many different files on my desktop, laptop, USB, and hard drives. Now, it will be placed in my own courses. I will have courses for:

  • Sprint Distance Triathletes
  • Olympic Distance Triathletes
  • How to Train the Mind
  • And Many More…

At “Rulon University,” the courses will be a GREAT way for you to “self-educate” yourself on your own time, having everything you needed to know in one place but not paying a SHIT TON of money for 1:1 Triathlon Coaching! Plus you will have an AMAZING community helping you along the way. Other classmates that have signed up for the course.

Rulon Racing (Applications coming October 1st)

Community – a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

When I started putting my business together, I came up with many different ideas, reaching out to other triathlon coaches from different cities and countries to see how they do things. I also looked at different business models; CrossFit, for example. I also thought about my time with lululemon athletica. What I LOVE about a lot of the people and businesses that I was looking at was they were all about “Community.”

When I was chatting with a friend about my business and brand, she said to me, the Rulons are FEARLESS. POSITIVE. NO BULLSH*%. I thought about that for a bit. Yes, we are. We (Chris and I) make SH%$ happen.

Ever take “Strength Finder?” Check it out. Here are my Top 5: Woo. Learner. Futuristic. Positivity. Harmony. Here are some ideas of actions for a couple of them:

Ideas of Action for Positivity:

  • You may get your greatest joy by encouraging people.
  • Plan highlight activities for your friends and colleagues.
  • Avoid Negative People

Ideas of Action for Futuristic:

  • Surround yourself with people who are eager to put your vision into motion.
  • Your futuristic talents could equip you to be a guide or coach for others.

So, how can we build a “Community” of FEARLESS, POSITIVE, NO BULLSH%$ athletes and utilize my strengths in my life?  We build a “Rulon Racing” team!!!

Application for Rulon Racing begins on October 1st! More details to come this month!

How to ROCK THE SH%^ out of YOUR Coaching Business

Just an FYI: I am a 100% HONEST person and I will tell you this… It has taken me almost 5 years to build my brand and to get to where I am today. So, I will tell you, this is going to take work. It will not happen overnight.  You are going to have to do the hard work. You are going to have to put the time in. I will also tell you this…it will be worth it!

Let me tell you how I started the, and building my brand authentically with social media:

It was 2012. I was sitting on the pier in Kona Hawaii, watching my husband start the Ironman Triathlon World Championship. I graduated at UTSA with my Masters of Science in Kinesiology. I was at lost. I was applying for jobs, getting turned down and then I was even turning down jobs because it just didn’t’ feel right.

That is when was born. It was time to start my triathlon coaching company. It was time to take my coaching job to full time and jump in feet first.

I did everything and anything you can imagine as a triathlon coach. I had running clinics. I had Strength Training Classes for Triathletes. I wrote 3 blogs a week. I posted on every social media platform that was out there. I helped athletes with their nutrition, even though I am not technically a nutritionist. I had Jen Rulon Kits for my athletes. You name it. AND I offered shit for free.

A year later, I was freaking burned out, with not a lot of money in the bank and truly just frustrated. I thought I was doing what I needed to do, until I realized I was doing WAY too much for my TRIATHLON coaching company!

I needed help. I started reaching out to business coaches for my business. I had a triathlon coach, so why is having a business coach any different? These business coaches have been absolutely amazing and I can’t thank them enough!

Let’s go back to Boulder, CO at the Endurance Coaching Summit in August. Another lightbulb turned on. I started hearing other coaches asking about social media, how to build their brand and the company.  Some of these coaches that were being asked have been around for YEARS, so writing for triathlon magazines and articles in the newspapers were HUGE but we have one of the biggest platforms now to grow your brand authentically…SOCIAL MEDIA!

This is where I came up with:

“Five Most Strategic Ways to Rock Your Triathlon Coaching Business.”

Currently, it is September 6, 2017. I am sitting here. Feeling so extremely blessed, overwhelmed with joy and a little bit teary eyed.

Remember 5 years ago. I was sitting on that pier watching Chris participate at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Now, here I am, preparing myself for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. I am not going to be sitting on that pier watching, but I will be participating as 5 years later.

My favorite quote of all times…

AUTHOR: Jen Rulon

I have been coaching triathletes, runners, and cyclists for over 21+ years; I received my Master's Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Science. And as you may have learned, there is more to life than swimming, biking, and running. It is a lifestyle, and I am here to help you cross that finish line with a smile, whether it is an Ironman Triathlon or the Ironman of Life. You can find my knowledge shared in Triathlete Magazine, Runners World, on the TEDx Stage, the Health and Wellness Expo in San Antonio, TX, Southwest Research Institute Human Performance Summit, Training Peaks Workshops, "Self Motivation Strategies for Women" on Amazon, Men's Journal Online, and the New York Times. I also practice what I preach—she's a 15x Ironman Triathlete who participated in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, on October 14, 2017.
