Rulon Rules: Strength Training & the Triathlete

Why I LOVE Strength Training & the Triathlete!

Since 2009, I started doing CrossFit. I went through some personal issues (2 miscarriages and lost my Dad), so for me to sit on a bike for 2 hours was NOT going to happen. My mind would think too much. My wonderful lululemon athletica friends took me to Body Armor CrossFit in San Antonio and I was hooked!!! It was an hour of my time without thinking and getting back in shape. Only, it was a shape that I have never seen before. I became stronger, had more confidence in myself as a person and as an athlete, and I was faster!!!

Over the last few years during CrossFit training, I would sign up for triathlons, would have a blast and would be in the top of my age group, without doing much triathlon training. Now, mind you, I was only doing sprint and mini-sprint triathlons. 70.3 Ironman and Ironman training is a different beast. I was CrossFitting; 5 times a week, along with running.

In 2010, I also started coaching CrossFit and saw a difference in athletes and how they improved over time. I loved it when I saw people get their first pull up or even their first handstand push up. It was pretty awesome as a coach. That’s what I love about coaching athletes… seeing that sense of accomplishment, whether it was their first pull up or crossing that line at a triathlon. That moment is priceless.

As I was coaching my triathletes, I put in mini-WODs (Workout of the Day) and some lifting for them. I saw them “turn the corner”…

  • ~I didn’t see the injuries.
  • ~I saw confidence that I haven’t seen before in some of them.
  • ~I saw athletes passing other athletes; like it was a breeze… they went into that uncomfortable feeling in their heart, mind and body, because they have done that before in a mini-workout.
  • ~I saw the strength building in their posterior chain versus all in the quads and shoulders.
  • ~I saw the improvement in my athletes’ 5k’s as well. If you don’t believe me…  Click HERE for a study about female distance runners and strength training.
