Business Owners: 5 Tips How to Break the Notification Habits

Side Note from Coach Jen: This blog is for you as much as it is for me. As an entrepreneur for nearly ten years, I’ve had countless moments where I just didn’t feel like working. I’d pick up my phone, scroll through Instagram, check IG Stories, dive into TikTok—the list goes on. I know how distracting it can be! That’s why I’m sharing these tips to help both of us stay focused. If you’re struggling to manage your social media time, grab my Social Media Calendar here to stay on track without falling into the notification trap!

Always Checking Notifications? Try These Five Steps to Break the Habit

Do you feel like your phone is controlling your time? If you’re constantly checking notifications, emails, and social media, you’re not alone. Many entrepreneurs and business owners feel stuck in this cycle, but breaking the habit is possible! With these five tips, you can regain focus and reconnect with what truly matters.

1. Stick to a Schedule

Set a specific schedule for checking your notifications, emails, and social media. Start with 15- or 30-minute intervals and gradually increase them to 45 minutes, then an hour.

For emails, set a timer—5 minutes for quick responses or 10–15 minutes for a busy inbox. Communicate this new routine with your friends, family, and colleagues so they understand you won’t be replying immediately.

2. Turn Off Push Notifications

Push notifications are a major distraction. You don’t need constant interruptions from social media updates, podcasts, or emails. Turn off as many push notifications as you can, including calendar reminders, and stick to your set schedule for checking updates.

3. Remove Distracting Apps

Many phone habits are automatic. You might scroll from Instagram to Facebook, then check the weather or play a game without even realizing it. Combat this by deleting unnecessary apps, especially social media. Instead, use your phone’s web browser or a computer to engage—it’s less convenient, but that’s the point.

4. Keep Your Phone Away from the Bed

Your phone doesn’t need to be the first or last thing you see each day. Replace it with an old-school alarm clock to break the habit of scrolling in bed. (Challenging, I know!)

5. Use a Smart Speaker

Smart speakers are great for reducing screen time. Instead of using your phone to play music, listen to podcasts, or check the weather, simply ask your smart speaker. You’ll avoid the temptation of opening other apps and stay focused on your day.

The less time you spend glued to your phone, the more productive and present you’ll feel. By taking these small steps, you might even notice your days feeling longer and more meaningful because you’re truly experiencing life—not just reacting to notifications.
