Why I Took a 24-Hour Digital Detox – And What I Learned

As an online coach, being accessible to my athletes is crucial. But like everyone, I need boundaries. Thankfully, my athletes are understanding when I say, “I need time to unplug.”

A couple of months ago, I hit a wall. I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and quite honestly, hating my phone and computer. They were with me constantly, and it was becoming too much. So, I did it—I disappeared for 24 hours. No texts, no emails, no notifications.

And let me tell you, it was a game-changer.

These days, our smartphones and screens are extensions of ourselves. We’re trained to grab our phones at the first ding or vibration. But what happens when we step away, even briefly? It turns out, a lot.

Why We’re Hooked

Let’s be honest—technology has made life easier, but it’s also made us dependent. Each notification triggers a release of dopamine, the “feel-good” chemical. It’s why we keep coming back for more, creating a cycle that impacts not just our health but also our relationships.

In fact, surveys show that excessive screen time is linked to anxiety, depression, and dissatisfaction in personal connections. So, what’s the solution?

A full digital detox might seem impossible. But finding a balance is achievable—and worth it.

What Happens When You Detox

Here’s what I learned from my 24-hour tech timeout:

  1. Better Posture and Presence
Without constantly looking down at my phone, I stood taller, felt more energetic, and became more approachable.

  2. Deeper Conversations
Without Google or quick answers, conversations flowed naturally. Discussions became richer, building stronger connections.

  3. Sharper Memory
Being present helped me recall names, places, and details I usually forget. Neuroscientists say that being “in the moment” enhances our ability to process and store information.

  4. Improved Sleep
Unplugging from screens meant better rest. Studies show that screen light disrupts melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep.

Moving Forward

While a full detox isn’t practical every day, I’m committing to small changes:

  • No phone/computer after 9 PM.
  • Phones stay off the table during meals with family and friends.
  • One 24-hour detox each month.
  • No scrolling first thing in the morning—coffee and quiet time come first.
