Updated Blog: Rulon Running Rules

As runners, we cherish the freedom and peace that running gives us. However, safety should always be at the forefront of every workout, no matter how familiar or routine the run might feel. While the story below is from 2015, the “Rulon Running Rules” still hold strong and are more relevant than ever.

The Story

I remember it vividly—February 2015. I was preparing for Ironman Texas in May, and I decided to take my dog, Mr. Macca, for a trail run. We started from home, running a mile to reach the trails. For some reason, I brought my phone, which I rarely do on runs.

As we hit the trail, Macca paused for his business, giving me that guilty “don’t watch me” look that always made me laugh. Not paying attention, I suddenly heard a loud pop and hit the ground. Thankfully, it wasn’t into Macca’s droppings!

At first, I thought I’d stepped on a branch, but then I noticed my ankle swelling—a grapefruit-sized reminder that I’d ignored a basic safety rule: always being aware of my surroundings.

Luckily, I had my phone to call Chris and my doctor, Dr. Marque Allen, and get home safely. That moment reinforced the importance of running safety, not just for avoiding accidents but for being prepared when they happen.

Rulon Running Rules for Safety

Whether you’re training for your next race or running for fun, here are some key tips to keep you safe:

1. Be Accountable for Your Safety

Always stay aware of your surroundings. Whether it’s uneven terrain, traffic, or other people, vigilance is your best tool to avoid accidents.

2. Run in Familiar or Public Areas

Running in an unfamiliar or isolated area alone increases risks. If possible, run with a buddy or in a group. If you’re exploring a new route, use the Road ID App or share your location with someone you trust.

3. Carry a Cell Phone

Your phone isn’t just for music; it’s your lifeline in an emergency. Don’t leave home without it.

4. Respect Traffic Rules

Even when you have the right of way, make eye contact with drivers and ensure they see you before crossing. A distracted driver can still cause harm, regardless of who’s “right.”

5. Run Facing Traffic

This gives you a clear view of approaching vehicles and allows drivers to see you more easily. Avoid blind corners and shoulderless roads when possible.

6. Limit Distractions

Headphones are a runner’s best friend, but they can also dull your situational awareness. If you love running with music, use bone-conduction headphones or keep one earbud out. Save the immersive playlists for controlled environments like tracks or treadmills.

7. Stay Visible

Wear reflective gear, especially during early morning or evening runs. Being seen is key to staying safe.

8. Avoid Predictability

Change up your routes and running times occasionally. This reduces the chance of becoming a target for those with ill intentions.

9. Protect Your Identity

Always wear a Road ID or carry identification. In case of an emergency, first responders will know who you are and how to contact your loved ones.

Running Is Safe—and Worth It!
