I was in San José recently when the ground started to sway beneath me. At first, I thought I was imagining it — maybe too much coffee, perhaps just nerves or dealing with “midlife” hot flashes. But no. It was an earthquake.
It didn’t last long, but for those seconds, everything felt uncertain. The walls, the floor, the world itself seemed unstable. And as quickly as it started, it was over. But I was left thinking: earthquakes and midlife have a lot in common.

The Shake-Up
Midlife can feel like the ground shifts under your feet. A marriage ends. A parent passes away. Menopause symptoms change how your body feels. A career you once loved no longer fits.
It’s unsettling. You question everything you thought was steady. Just like an earthquake, these moments often come without warning.

The Foundation Check
An earthquake shows you where the cracks are. In midlife, shake-ups do the same.
- They reveal where you’ve been running on autopilot.
- They show you the relationships, routines, or beliefs that no longer support you.
- They force you to look at what’s built on solid ground and what needs to be rebuilt.
It’s not easy, but it’s necessary. Because sometimes we won’t make changes until life shakes us awake.

The Rebuild
The truth is, the shake-up isn’t the end. It’s the invitation.
When the ground steadies again, you get to choose:
- Do I rebuild the same house with the same cracks?
- Or do I create something stronger, more intentional, more aligned with who I am now?
For me, the shake-ups — divorce, moving to Costa Rica, redefining myself after triathlon — gave me the chance to rebuild, not into the same old life, but into one that finally feels like home.

Your Takeaway
Midlife shake-ups aren’t punishment. They’re invitations to rise stronger.
So if you’re in the middle of your own “earthquake,” here’s what I want you to remember:
- You’re not broken.
- The ground will steady again.
- And what you rebuild can be more beautiful than before.

Here is YOUR Invitation
At my Rise with the Tides Retreat in Costa Rica this December, we’ll lean into these themes: movement, mindset, metabolism, and meaning.
Because sometimes the ground has to shift before we rise. 🌺
This is the work we do in my Rise Strong community and at my upcoming Rise with the Tides Retreat in Costa Rica.
Together, we reset our energy, reclaim our strength, and rise into the next chapter with intention.
